Actually, clear-cutting does not mimic wildfires at all. But you are correct on the point of controlled back-burning. In the wild world, burn-offs of forest dross (all that stuff on the ground) has been found to be frequent in areas man does not overwork. What this causes is that forest fires generally do not kill most of the trees and they survive on. So...as long as the excessive dried dross/timber is kept from getting excessive the fires generally do not consume the larger trees. Nothing like clearcutting. Also the other issue is this...ALL of the current species of replacement conifers used on this continent by the forrestry industry are engineered to grow much faster than the species they replaced (which is nice)....but ithas been found that they emit some 40% less oxygen due to the diffferent density. They are not a direct replacement. There is no shortage of steel at all. It just costs more right now. There is enough ore bearing rocks strata to last millenia. The coming thing...and it works great ...do a google search...is concrete cast stud work for housing. Yes, we need wood, but there is nothing green about the forrestry industry. They are just careful to protect their interest by replanting (kudo's!) but it has nothing to do with being green or beneficial. Ray | ||
