  Frog answered most of your questions but here is what I think about the cold peel problem is.

The hot splitting around the edges is more than likely caused by a vacuum created when lifting the upper press. I had this with shirts when I first started. You can use a tiny piece of heat resistant tape on each end of the transfer to hold it down or use a piece of t-shirt long enough that it hangs down over the ends about 4 or 5 inches and when you first pop the heat platen, don't let it come open but raise it slowly. This should stop the hot splitting.

The image left in the cap by the heat platen is a problem I always had with the Poly/Foam caps. Caused by the foam getting mashed. I assume these are black caps. I did very few of them. Most of mine were light colored and I used the hot peel method. Have a BLESSED day & weekend.
