What Rich is saying here is important.
Just saying a pallate is 1/4" aluminum and should be tough...does not take into account what it is made of.

There are so many grades of aluminum...from basic 3003 general purpose, to 6061 multipurpose corrosion reistant all the way to 7075 extreme corrosion proof aircraft aluminum....and all are available in various levels of heat treting or not. They all have different alloys and different heat and structural stabilities. Before you invest time and money in trying to fix what you have, find out who made them and what they are made of. Ray
