Nathan, I'd like to try and help but I don't think that I understand your question/problem.

If your grouped clipart is a vector, then all you need to do is ungroup the image in order to use the eraser tool. Sometimes clipart is grouped within groups. Check your Status Bar to make sure that you, indeed, fully ungrouped the art. Select the piece that you want to erase and away you go.

The only reason that I can think of that Corel won't let you ungroup or break apart is if you are dealng with a raster image.
Now you can still use the eraser on a bitmap, but you'll just have to be more careful, because as you say, the image remains as a whole.

I have no idea what you mean when you say that Corel is moving the "object over"???
As far as blob goes.......again, if you're dealing with a bitmap, by default Corel will close the area around the place where you erased. Looking in Wireframe view, it will look blobby, but that's normal.

As I'm writing this, I'm guessing that you are dealing with a raster image. I'm also guessing that you (mistakenly) thought that using the eraser tool will act as a mask.
I'm betting that you have a bitmap that you want to remove parts of, right? Like take the background out? Remove the dog next to the guy? Take the hat off a girl's head?

If I'm guessing correctly, the eraser tool probably isn't what you're looking for. Editing bitmaps, to that extent, is best achieved by bringing your image into PhotoPaint.
Click on the image, if Edit Bitmap appears on your upper Property Bar, then go ahead and start experimenting with the editing tools available there in PP.
