 I'm not sure if we're on the same page here.
This explains 'swap file' or 'page file' or 'virtual memory' ( lots of different names, eh? ) better than I can.
It's a little dated ( no vista in it ), but it's honest.

As Russ mentioned, a hard drive has a faster access time and a better pipeline to work with.
