After the transition from Illustrator 8 through 9 to AI10 reaching the point of being fed up with the application implementing "features" that actually made professional level work much MUCH harder to do with no means to revert to a traditional workflow I asked some pointed questions on the Adobe Illustrator Forums and got into a heated argument with one of the developers. Her name is actually on the scroll screen for the product so I knew I was at least dealing with an actual dev and not a forum drone. At the time I was doing packaging design for some major toy companies and was working on very large complex files. AI10 was when they decided to start with this sub layering madness and forcing the user to work with objects through the layer palette rather than directly on the artboard specifically in the area of multiple grouped objects in a mask. This made it a a real pain in the a$$ to quickly move a group as you could no longer select just that group with one click on the artboard with the mask active. You had to dig down through the palette and click the little selection circle. When I pushed on the forums on how innane this was the dev brought up the lovely group selection arrow tool. Well that work fine if you have a circle grouped with a square and are in illustrator kindergarten land but in the real world of production files there can easily be a few thousand objects in a group made of a few dozen groups and there is no way to be sure with the group selection tool if you have selected far enough up the group chain via it's multi click grow selection functionality to get everything you want.

I think Adobe has gotten to a point where they need to add features that the marketing team can promote to move more units even if those features are making the product less functional to the end user.
