When removing a background, you should do the following.

1. Double-click background layer (original image layer), save as Layer 0.

2. Create a new transparent layer, name it "background" (or whatever you wish) and move it beneath Layer 0.

3. Remove whatever portions of the image you wish on Layer 0 and save as a PSD (most vector programs will work with a PSD these days).

4. Select the portion you removed with the magic wand (transparent area) and Inverse select. You can now add a path or clipping mask. If you're careful when erasing, you can get a pretty clean edge so the image won't look cropped.

Hope this helps.
