It is my understanding (from watching the Discovery Channel) that the Chinese workers who were working on the railroads were actually treated worse. Slave owners cared about their slaves because the slaves were property that could be bought and sold. If a slave owner lost a slave, the owner was out big bucks. But if the railroad company lost a worker, it was no big deal. The railroads could not sell the workers, so although it cost money to have them imported, they had no value to the railroads after the railroad was finished. Chinese workers recieved absolutely no medical care, no breaks, no days off, no right to attend religious service, and were provided no housing. But slaves did recieve all that. | |
