| I grew up in Rual Oklahoma. Needles to say, the prevailing attitude was one of "whites only". My mom and dad had a family cafe on the main line of the Santa Fe Railroad. There were many hobos who passed our way and my dad never turned anyone away who was in need of a meal. I remember this black man who came offering to work for a meal. My dad fed him and asked for nothing in return. I recal this poor man being very nervous as he ate. My dad asked him about this. He told my dad that he was afraid that the white folk may not take kindly to a black man in his cafe. My dad told him that hunger knows no color and everyone was welcome in his place. I never forgot that. | |
