We do thse every once and a while. They are a pain in the neck. We use 15" square standard jacket back hoops by SWF. You can really see the hoops sweat as we start out kinda loose to beast the hoops together then tighten up the screw. Not a good way to do it but we get away with it so far!!!!! Any way you can think of to soften up the fabric is a big help. We do this by hooping the garment about 100 times until it stops poppoin out of the hoop. When it finally holds we find the material has been sufficiently beat to a pulp and willing to take the hoop. What a PAIN!!!!! There are several other ways.. One is to wrap the hoop with the foamy kind of athletic tape. This has some grip to it and a bunch of compression so it tends to help captuure the garment. We have never tried this method. Another method is to simply hoop your heavy backing by it self. Digitize up a basting stitch that has no tie in or tie off and stitch length of about 20 to 30 points. The basiting design should border reasonably close to the actual design you are planning to sew on the jacket and have enough passes to secure the jacket to the backing solidly. Lay the jacket on the hoop center it all up (a real pain to do) and pin it in several areas just to keep it in place until you can run the basting stitch that will attach the jacket to the backing. Sew your desigh inside the basting stitch, when finished simply remove the basting stitching, it will come out easily if you make he stitches long enough. We have used this method but prefer to beat the heck out of our hoops. One word of caution this method is OK if you stabilive the jacket pretty good but very high stitch counts can raise heck with the push / pull as the design sews. DO NOT USE THIS METHOD IF your design has a lot of close registration detail. Last but not least what ever method you use MAKE SURE YOU SUPPORT THE JACKET ON THE MACHINE TABLE and make sure things like sleeves and zippers will not snag as the design sews!!! I hope you don't have a compact machine for your own sanity but in ant event these garments are a pain. best of luck mike mooseman calabrese manhattan moose embroidery!
