Unfortunately, one of the downsides of buying or inheriting "used" frames is that most of them aren't cared for properly.

What you are experiencing is the result of poor cleaning after each reclaim or using very cheap tape over the locking strips which overtime the adhesive melts down under the locking strip.

What happens is when a screen is reclaimed, we typically concentrate on the mesh for a thorough washout. During this process all the emulsion, ink, adhesive residue ends up going to the sides of the mesh, or towards the locking strip. No one ever spends the time to then thoroughly washout over the strips to ensure that the residue does not dry in this area.

If you have no mesh in these frames, you will have to possibly soak them in emulsion remover to breakdown the dried emulsion. Additional soaking in a mild solvent may be necessary to breakdown the adhesive and dried ink. Try something like a "press wash" or "ink degradent". Maybe try using a can of Screen Opener first. Then you can try using a needle nose pliers to pull and slide the locking strips out. It's important that you let the rollers thoroughly dry after cleaning as this is the best way to tell if you did get all the adhesive off. After pulling the locking strips out, thoroughly clean all the channels so that it doesn't stick again.

Purchase a roll or two of locking strip to replace all of the used ones from these frames. Replace them even if they slid out easily the first time.

I hope this helps. Feel free to call me if you have any more questions.
