Your gut instinct is already telling you that something's fishy. Listen to your gut! The only way I would do this is to get at least a 50% deposit by credit card. If she insists on a check then tell her you'll have to wait for it to clear or she can send a cashier's check from a major bank or a money order. Upon completion of the order, the balance must be paid by the same terms prior to shipping. Sometimes, long distance customers are wary of payng the balance prior to seeing the finished product. Send 1 shirt for them to approve or e-mail a pic of the completed shirts. You've still got the deposit.
