It may be, that they jsut don't know how, and not that they can't. Send them this. Open file, Go to thetop menu bar and click and hold on… FILE Scroll down to SAVE AS, Under FORMAT: tell them to stay in Adobe Illustrator Document: Click SAVE. Under VERSION: drag down to version 10. Click save. Then repeat all of that for another version of 9, and then again for version 8. One of them should work for you to open. If they can't do that, then it's because your client does not actually have Illustrator and got that file from dmone else.
