First off, how do you even work with an ai file if you don't have Illustrator (or a compatible program)?

Next, if he doesn't know what he is doing with separations, do you think he knew how to vector a Photoshop file? I saw no mention of a trace program.

Now, not all files need to be vectorized. PSD files created in spot colors, at decent resolution are usually fine. If they were not created in spot colors, your friend may want to learn about the "color range" and channels. heres an explanation.

Now, as for you and no real graphics programs after almost two years, Shame! Old versions of Photoshop (7 is great), Illustrator, or especially the best deal, CorelDRAW Suite are damn cheap online.
